The best way to learn and gain experience: do.
Doing, though, isn’t always available.
The second best way: read.
As Seth reminds, reading is one of the best imaginable bargains. There are few better ways to absorb wisdom from masters. Often it is the only way to experience places or times or activities that would otherwise be unattainable.
The difference is stark between the knowledge of those who read and those who don’t. Charlie Munger had it right: “In my whole life, I have known no wise people (over a broad subject matter area) who didn’t read all the time – none, zero.”
